Ramsey NJ Golf and Country Club Specialist
HISTORY OF THE RAMSEY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

OUR PRESENT CLUB HAD IT'S BEGINNING AS A 220 ACRE ESTATE CALLED "ARLENA TOWERS", WHICH WAS CAREFULLY DEVELOPED OVER A 30 YEAR PERIOD BY TWO OWNERS BEGINNING IN THE EARLY 19OO'S. THE ORIGINAL MANSION WAS OF ANCIENT NORMAN ARCHITECTURE AND WAS MODELED AFTER THE FAMOUS RAMSEY ABBEY, WHICH STILL STANDS IN HAMPSHIRE, COUNTY OF HANKS, IN ENGLAND, ERECTED BY KING EDWARD THE ELDER ABOUT 600 A.D. MANY OF THE MATERIALS FOR THE MANSION WERE BROUGHT OVER FROM ENGLAND.

THE ELABORATE LANDSCAPING, PLANTINGS AND SEEDING OF THE ESTATE WERE BEGUN BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER, ARTHUR BRANDEIS OF DEPARTMENT STORE AND THEATRICAL FAME. THE BEAUTIFICATION OF THE PROPERTY WAS COMPLETED BY THE SECOND OWNER, JOSEPH DE WYCKOFF, CO-FOUNDER OF THE VANADIUM CORP. OF AMERICA. THREE BEAUTIFUL LAKES WERE DEVELOPED ON THE PROPERTY, THE LARGEST, CRYSTAL LAKE, COVERING 30 ACRES. THEIR SHADED BANKS WERE LANDSCAPED AND PLANTED, THE MANSION WAS SURROUNDED BY TOWERING TREES AND BEAUTIFUL GARDENS. HUNDREDS OF VARIETIES OF TREES, SHRUBS AND FLOWERS ABOUNDED, MANY OF WHICH WERE IMPORTED AND VERY RARE FOR THIS AREA. THE 50 ACRE SEEDED LAWN, NOW PART OF OUR GOLF COURSE, WAS CONSIDERED THE LARGEST AND BEST KEPT LAWN IN THE EAST. AROUND 1935 "ARLENA TOWERS" WAS AWARDED FIRST PRIZE AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ESTATE IN AMERICA IN THE NATIONAL BETTER LAWNS AND GARDENS CONTEST.

IN 1940 THE DE WYCKOFF ESTATE WAS SOLD TO NATIONAL HOUSE & FARMS ASSOCIATION FOR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT AND WAS NAMED THE RAMSEY COUNTRY CLUB ESTATES. EACH PURCHASER AGREED TO ABIDE BY THE RULES OF THE CLUB BY ACCEPTING TITLE AND WAS ISSUED A SHARE OF STOCK, A PRACTICE WHICH IS STILL IN EFFECT. THE STARTING PRICE OF HOMES WAS APPROXIMATELY $5,000.

APPROXIMATELY 40 HOMES WERE BUILT BEFORE WORLD WAR II FORCED A HALT IN CONSTRUCTION DUE TO MATERIAL SHORTAGES. BEING UNABLE TO CONTINUE BUILDING, NATIONAL HOUSE & FARMS OFFERED THE BUILDING LOTS FOR SALE AND AGREED TO TURN OVER THE MANSION AND SURROUNDING PROPERTY, INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL GOLF COURSE, TO THE EXISTING HOMEOWNERS. THUS, THE RAMSEY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB WAS BORN.

THE EARLY MEMBERS CONTRIBUTED MANY HOURS OF TIME AND LABOR TOWARD MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING THE FACILITIES. THERE WAS NO STAFF OF ANY KIND AND ALL COOKING, SERVING, CLEANING AND GARDENING WAS DONE BY THE MEMBERS. IN 1953, THE MEMBERSHIP BEGAN A SERIES OF IMPROVEMENTS WHICH INCLUDED DOUBLING THE SIZE OF THE ORIGINAL BALLROOM, ADDING THE PATIO AND FILLING IN THE SUNKEN GARDENS TO PROVIDE A PARKING LOT.

IN 1961, A CAPITAL ASSESSMENT WAS APPROVED TO FINANCE FURTHER MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS AND PURCHASE AN ADDITIONAL 17 ACRES OF LAND TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF OUR GOLF COURSE. MUCH LATER THE BOWLING ALLEY WAS CONVERTED INTO THE PRO SHOP AND WARM-UP ROOM FOR THE PLATFORM TENNIS COURTS WHICH WERE BUILT IN 1978.

FURTHER RENOVATION PLANS HAD BEEN APPROVED TO ENLARGE THE KITCHEN AND UPDATE THE BALLROOM AND GRILLE ROOM FACILITIES WHEN THE DISASTEROUS FIRE OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 14, 1986, COMPLETELY GUTTING THE BUILDING. NOTHING REMAINED BUT THE ORIGINAL STONE WALLS AND IT WAS DECIDED THAT THEY SHOULD BE PRESERVED. THE RENOVATION PLANS WERE QUICKLY CONVERTED TO RECONSTRUCTION PLANS, AND 17 MONTHS LATER THE CLUB HOUSE WAS COMPLETELY AND AUTHENTICALLY RESTORED AND ENLARGED BY OVER 6,000 SQUARE FEET TO INCLUDE A GRAND BALLROOM ACCOMMODATING 150 PEOPLE, FORMAL DINING ROOM, PRIVATE DINING ROOM, GRILLE ROOM, TERRACE FOR DINING OFF THE LARGE BAR, AND OFFICE FACILITIES ON THE THIRD FLOOR. THE REOPENING OF THE CLUBHOUSE WAS CELEBRATED ON AUGUST 1, 1987 WITH FLAG RAISING, RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONIES AND A CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH. IN ADDITION ON AUGUST 22, 1987 WITH A DINNER AND DANCE ATTENDED BY ALMOST 400 CLUB MEMBERS.

THERE ARE NOW OVER 550 HOMES, WHOSE OWNERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY MEMBERS OF THE RAMSEY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB AND WHO ARE ENTITLED TO ENJOY GOLF, SWIMMING, BOATING, FISHING AND ALL SOCIAL ACTIVITIES.
